Research Study
How does smell impact social and mental health?
Closed Recruitment
Other Ear, Nose, Mouth and Throat , Other Diet and Nutrition, Environmental factors, Other General Health , Other Men’s Health
The purpose of this study is to examine the path by which olfactory dysfunction affects social health and mental health. Olfactory dysfunction is a reduced or distorted ability to smell and is a common symptom of COVID-19 infection. There is a strong link between olfactory dysfunction and decreased mental health, and this link may be mediated by social factors.
Potential participants will undergo an eligibility screening via Zoom. Two questionnaires will assess participants' eligibility. If a participant is eligible, those who wish to continue will be asked to provide their mailing address so that a smell test kit can be sent to them. Once the kits are delivered to the participant, another Zoom call will be scheduled to guide the participant through the smell test and the questionnaire. Following this, participants will repeated this process independently 7 additional times (at weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 32 & 48). Finally, the ASA24, a dietary intake questionnaire, will be administered at three time points (Baseline, 16, & 48 weeks).
